Course Overview

This qualification provides you with the skills and knowledge to work as a professional dog groomer in the animal care industry.

You will learn in a practical environment at the College Dog Grooming Salon. There will be some theory to support skills development. You will need access to dogs with different coat types that you can bring in to groom as part of your assessments.

What You Will Study

You will study the following mandatory units:

  • Health and safety, legislation and codes of practice for the dog grooming industry
  • Preparing, styling and finishing a dog
  • Health checking and handling a dog in a dog grooming environment
  • Customer service and record keeping in a dog grooming environment

One day per week 9:00am - 3:00pm.

There is one written exam to cover knowledge and a practical assignment which covers health checks, first aid and grooming of dogs with different coat types and for different requirements.

You will need to have successfully completed and passed the Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistants course or have extensive practical experience in the dog grooming industry.

You will also need to purchase some equipment, such as an apron, sturdy footwear and a dog grooming kit.

You may wish to study business qualifications to help you start your own dog grooming business.
