College students celebrate achievements with award ceremonies
31 July 2024
To mark the end of the academic year, Wakefield College and Castleford College hosted a number of award ceremonies to celebrate their students’ accomplishments over the past year.
Several departments across the Colleges held their own award ceremonies to acknowledge their students including Care & Early Years, Construction, Foundation Learning, Animal Care and Hair & Beauty.
At Wakefield College, the Foundation Learning department held an entertainment-filled awards afternoon. The tutors handed out awards for each student to commemorate their hard work this year, alongside some special awards to mark exceptional progress in English, Maths and ICT.
Jayne Dariany, Curriculum Development Manager for Foundation Learning, said:
"To close the awards, our students put on a show for their audience of family and staff which saw Jack Scholey, opening the stage with a vocal cover of the powerful ballad, ‘You Raise Me Up’, leaving us all teary-eyed. We then welcomed a student’s original rap performance, followed by a musical theatre cover of ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ and a class sing-along to ‘(Is This The Way To) Amarillo’. It was wonderful to watch what our students had been working on in their arts classes this year and see them supported by everyone in the audience.”
Sam Wright, Principal and Chief Executive at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, said:
“Each year, we look forward to a variety of award shows to celebrate and acknowledge the academic and personal achievements of our students. It’s always inspiring to see the ways in which our students have progressed throughout the year– whether that’s overcoming barriers they faced, learning something new, or showing enthusiasm and commitment to their studies. I hope all our students are proud of themselves and their achievements as I know we are at the Group.”
The Animal Care Department at Wakefield College also hosted its own awards, with students being presented with ‘Students of the Year’, ‘Student Achievement’, ‘Superstar Award’ and even a ‘Purrrfect Attendance’ award.
Additionally, Care & Early Years held their first-ever awards evenings at both Wakefield College and Castleford College with each class being awarded with a ‘Student of the Year’, ‘Success Against Adversity’ and ‘Creativity and Innovation’ award.
Construction hosted a sponsored awards ceremony at Castleford College where students were joined by their parents, staff from the department and local employers as they collected their awards.
Hair & Beauty also congratulated their ‘Students of the Year’ in each class, with the winners receiving goodie bags from suppliers such as Keune and Ellisons.
